oats magotes

is anyone else obsessed with overnight oats?  judging by the copious amounts of blog posts about it, i’m sure plenty of you are.  i love oatmeal in all forms and preparation methods, but hands down, overnight is my favorite.  it’s almost too easy and too delicious to be good for you.  but alas, it is.  so i will continue to eat them nearly every day.  today i tried this chocolate cake batter overnight oats recipe from rabbit food for my bunny teeth (it doesn’t actually have cake batter in it…though that would be quite tasty).  it was super good!

oh, and did you know trader joe’s makes a ‘quick cook’ steel-cut oats?  and it’s pretty inexpensive too, around $3, i believe.  they only take 8 minutes to cook.  normal steel-cut oats take closer to 30 minutes.  but i use the overnight method to prepare mine.  1/4 c.  oats to 1/4-1/2 milk or water, depending on how thick you want it.  i like mine soupy so i use 1/2 c. milk.  and then you can add whatever else you like.  i always add cinnamon, frozen berries are good, dried fruit plumps up if you add it at the beginning, cocoa powder, honey or maple syrup to sweeten it…  i usually don’t add any sweeteners.  i always add some sort of fruit and that adds plenty of sweetness for me.

doesn’t it look so majestic??

so here’s the basics:

1/4  c.  steel-cut oats ( rolled or quick cooking work fine too, but if i use these i use 1/2 c.)

1/4 – 1/2  c.  milk (you can substitute some or all of this with water)

-combine in a lidded container the night before you want to eat them.  wake up the next morning and breakfast will be right in the fridge waiting for you.  like elves made it.  tiny refrigerator elves who wear ear muffs (because it’s cold in there)…creepy.

-1/4  c.  blueberries (frozen or fresh), 1/4 t.  cinnamon, 1 t.  maple syrup

-2 T chopped dates, 1/4  t.  cinnamon, 1/4  t.  freshly grated nutmeg, 1  t.  honey

-1 T  natural peanut butter, 2 T raisins or craisins (p.b. & j.!)

-1 T peanut butter, 1 T cocoa powder, 1 t. maple syrup

-1 T fruit preserves or jam

p.s. i now want to watch i love you man.  so funny.  wish i owned it.  or stilled lived with my other brother, because he does own it.  btw, jd, i accidentally stole your knocked up dvd : / oops…

I will have to try this. I do enjoy my oatmeal every morning. Microwave the quick Quaker oats and water until boiling. Set it on the counter until room temp….it will get really thick. I then add Dannon Light & Fit Vanilla yogurt. Almost like a dessert…yum.

just found your blog/recipe, can’t wait to try this out tonight! Quick question, where did you find your mason jar with a handle? I’ve only seen ones without lids but I definitely would prefer having a lid on my jar if i’m keeping it in my fridge overnight!
